In the third edition of Muse, colour trends for 2007 are moving to politics, religion, ecology and even biology. Architecture and interior design continues its dialogue with fashion and art and is increasingly becoming one of the most exciting forms of contemporary culture and expression.
Downsizing is playing an important role in the thirtysomething culture where a small apartment is easy to run, easy to leave, is more ecologically sound and there is something comforting about being able to survey your entire kingdom from where you sit! Although downsizing to a mini-pad does require a disciplined approach to utilizing space and editing content but there is something rewarding about knowing that every element of your home is either functional or cherished. However in some cases supersized is still more satisfying!
Natural and eco concerns will remain high on the agenda and recycling, transforming and customizing will be central to cutting-edge furniture and object design. Forward-thinkers will put craft and personally into existing forms, giving them additional or totally new functions. This distinct 'human' element is without doubt, a backlash to the perfectionism of the Internet and the increasingly virtual and inanimate worlds in which we live. 'Damaged goods' and 'make do and mend' will become buzzwords denoting innovation.
Ethnic cultures will continue to captivate and inspire and the role reversal of economy states in the coming years will see an even greater number of influences originating from Asia in particular. It is vital that global influences should be seen as a 'patchwork' of cultures and not a 'melting pot' - integrate not eradicate. The need for escapism, whether spiritual or hedonistic, will not diminish and designers will meet these contrasting demands by creating innovative environments, ranging from sublime interiors evoking monastic calm, to jawdropping spaces that exude 'all the fun of the fair.' The element of surprise will play an important role in building and decorating, from architectural pastiches with illuminated facades that offer total spectacle through to small-scale venues with fabulous interiors that bristle with innovative colour and light.

DREAMS
This watercolour palette - alternating from fresh and pretty to sharp and offbeat - has a strange hallucinatory quality suggesting a bizarre childlike atmosphere. Intense lime, beetroot and metallic mink prevent the range from falling into the realm of saccharine sweetness. Taking it's cue from adult toy mascots and cute cartoon animation, this theme underscores our craving for fantasy and diversion, and transports us to a place where we can find comfort and reassurance.

GLOBAL HERITAGE
A fusion of peasant and regal ceremonial references from cultures across the globe looks to ancient crafts and skills that hold traditional values. Folkloric traditions from the Andes to China and everywhere in between create a feeling of respect and integrity.

ARCANE WISDOM
Ancient beliefs and black magic influences are combined in this mystical, enigmatic story. Pataphysics and alchemy fuel a dark palette, with charred levels of colour grounded in blue-black tones. Dark inkiness contrasts with chalky slate surfaces, whilst skeletal structures add a new level of intricacy to clean, slick forms.

ORGANIC CON-SCIENCE
A youthful and uplifting story, organic con-science takes inspiration from regenerative nature, referencing sprouting green shoots and botanical structures such as seed pods and stamens. Glasshouses blur the distinctions between outside and in, while the use of organic materials suggests the growing shift towards current eco-concerns.

METALLIC GLAMOUR
A palette of rich chromatic hues that shimmer and shine. Shimmering in depth, colour, iridescent, incandescence. Chaotic layers, technical finishes, controlled chaos, translucent, illuminate glass, optical depth, artificial light, blue light. Shiny mirror, like surfaces, cut or wavy mirrors that deform and multiply reflections. Dashes of white, gold and solver just like reflections. Metallised printing and embossing. Silky looks and shiny elegance – but nothing vulgar.
