Muse Second Issue - 2006

In the second edition of Muse we cast aside the time when ‘less is more’ and minimalism was the philosophy of creativity in all industry sectors from interiors, fashion and food. Enter the era of ‘Showtime’ or more appropriately ‘Showhome’ with more than a notion of Burlesque design influence infusing everything.

Advertising, club interiors, fashion shows, new release films are all full of references to the circus, vaudeville, cabaret and even striptease enveloping and inspiring a new decadence that takes in the voluptuous, the over-the-top, the rich, the sensual and the erotic.

Fashion always scared to follow theatrical in tough times, is also following suit. Vivienne Westwood featured Dita Von Teese in a recent campaign; Agent Provocateur is a natural, advocating their brand as the ‘Greatest lingerie show on Earth!’ Touches are also clear in the latest campaigns from Dolce & Gabbana.

Even music hasn’t escaped its influence with Madonna’s highly theatrical launch of ‘Confessions on a dance floor’ and new bands emerging such a Goldfrapp.

Touch, smell, sight, sound, taste and emotion; the senses are working overtime for 2006!

Roll up, roll up and prepare yourself for the second act of Muse a dazzling and stupendous display of trends
for the 2006th year through the magic of print!

2006 Trends
BIZARRE
Featured at Design Interiors 2006, Bizarre is lighthearted and saucy; a throwback to 30’s and 40’s reflecting our continuing need for luxury and our obsession with the celebrity. This theme evokes the bygone world of the Hollywood superstar of both silver screen and early Technicolor. Decorative, exuberant and a walk on the wild side but far removed from the vulgarity of bling!
Bizarre - Expect the unexpected
IDYLLIC
Idyllic is a trend that is shot through with romance and nostalgia; it’s steeped in tradition but replaced in a new way. Old is most definitely new! A naturalistic palette dominated by antique yellow casts of mustard, metallic gold and straw pays tribute to the fertility of the land at harvest time. Intensified by weathered timber colours and characterful textures, this is a story of quiet, refined rusticity that captures the warm satisfaction of relaxing on a summers evening after a days work in the fields.
Ornamental is function and decoration is form
KINETIC
Bold, uninhibited use of colour in large public spaces is at the core of this interior theme, although it can be adapted to more intimate settings. Embracing the human delight in all things exciting and intriguing, it focuses on creating ‘non-static’ virtual zones that cannot be contained and are in constant state of flux.
Exciting and intriguing
BIONIC
Luxury and practicality compliment each other in a theme that reflects the dynamism of modern life. Sleek, sophisticated, industrial neutrals are punctuated with vibrant ‘signs of life’ shots of UV blue and lava orange. Everything can be seen as an adventure in this sexy, rejuvenating world where self-sufficiency and disdain for authority are paramount, and valiance equals virility. Protective skins and body armour evoke the idea of the urban warrior and are closely allied to expensive and immaculate materials such as carbon, titanium and slate.
Luxury and Practicality
METALLIC GLAMOUR
A palette of rich chromatic hues that shimmer and shine. Shimmering in depth, colour, iridescent, incandescence. Chaotic layers, technical finishes, controlled chaos, translucent, illuminate glass, optical depth, artificial light, blue light. Shiny mirror, like surfaces, cut or wavy mirrors that deform and multiply reflections. Dashes of white, gold and solver just like reflections. Metallised printing and embossing. Silky looks and shiny elegance – but nothing vulgar.
